What to Wear to a Beach Wedding: Fabrics, Footwear and Colours by the Sea

Filed Takes
4 min read
Wedding, wedding ceremony and beach wedding

For most beach weddings, the best guest outfit is light and breathable: linen, cotton or a floaty synthetic in a soft or bright colour, paired with flat sandals, wedges or block heels that will not sink into sand. Men usually swap a wool suit for linen or lightweight cotton, and a tie becomes optional unless the invitation says otherwise. Above all, read the dress code, because "beach formal" and "beach casual" ask for quite different things.

Reading the invitation

Seaside weddings use their own vocabulary. The table below gives the usual interpretation, though couples sometimes add their own notes on the wedding website. For the full range of codes, from white tie downwards, see our explainer on wedding guest dress codes.

Fabrics that cope with heat

Natural, breathable fibres are the foundation of beach wedding guest attire. Synthetics can work if they are light and loosely woven, but heavy, glossy fabrics trap heat.

  • Linen breathes beautifully and creases easily. Accept the creases as part of its charm, or choose a linen blend that relaxes less.
  • Cotton and cotton voile are cool and easy to care for.
  • Chiffon and georgette move well in a breeze and suit more formal codes.
  • Seersucker and chambray look smart for men's jackets and shirts in hot weather.
  • Avoid wool suits, velvet, heavy satin and anything that needs a slip underneath to keep it from clinging.

The same thinking that keeps travellers comfortable in the heat of the bush applies here; our notes on fabrics and layers for safari explain why loose, natural weaves win in high temperatures.

Colours and prints

A beach setting welcomes colour. Pastels, coral, turquoise, sunshine yellow, sage and bold florals all sit happily against sand and sea. A few points of etiquette still hold:

  • Skip white, ivory, cream and very pale champagne, which can read as bridal in bright sunlight.
  • If the couple have shared a colour palette, follow it; if they have told you the bridesmaids' colour, choose something different.
  • Black is generally considered heavy for a daytime beach ceremony, though it can work at an evening reception with a formal code.
  • Very sheer fabrics become more see-through in strong sun. Check your outfit in daylight before the day.

Shoes for sand

Footwear is where beach outfits most often go wrong. Thin stiletto heels sink and wobble; sand fills closed shoes within minutes.

  1. Wedges and espadrilles spread weight and look dressy enough for most codes.
  2. Block heels are stable on boardwalks and firm sand.
  3. Embellished flat sandals suit casual and semi-formal weddings.
  4. Loafers worn without socks are the classic choice for men; leather sandals can work for beach casual.
  5. Barefoot ceremonies do happen. Bring shoes you can slip off easily and a small bag to carry them.

Sun, wind and evening chill

A sea breeze can turn a short, floaty skirt into a problem during group photos. Midi and maxi lengths with a little weight in the hem behave better. Wide-brimmed hats work for a daytime ceremony, but take them off if you are sitting where you might block someone's view. Apply sunscreen before dressing so it does not mark the fabric, and keep sunglasses off for the formal photographs.

Coastal evenings cool down quickly once the sun drops. A light wrap, pashmina or unlined jacket makes the reception far more comfortable.

Fit and comfort for a long day

Beach weddings often stretch from an afternoon ceremony through dinner and dancing. Choose clothes you can sit, eat and move in without constant adjusting. Dresses with built-in support save layering in the heat; our piece on dresses with built-in shapewear looks at how they balance a smooth line with comfort.

Garden and other outdoor weddings

Garden wedding attire follows similar principles: breathable fabrics, a lighter palette and florals. The difference is underfoot. Grass swallows narrow heels just as sand does, so block heels, wedges or clear heel protectors are worth packing. Morning dew and evening sprinklers are reasons to avoid suede.

Destination logistics

  • Pack the outfit in your cabin bag so it arrives with you. Our guide on packing a suit in a carry-on covers folding methods that work for dresses too.
  • Hang everything on arrival and steam it in the bathroom after a hot shower.
  • Check local customs. Ceremonies held at religious sites may ask for covered shoulders or knees.
  • Bring a backup pair of shoes in case the first pair rubs.

Can men wear shorts to a beach wedding?

Only when the invitation clearly says casual, and even then tailored shorts with a smart shirt are safer than anything resembling swimwear. When in doubt, wear light trousers.

Is a jumpsuit acceptable?

Yes. A well-cut jumpsuit in a breathable fabric suits most beach codes from casual to semi-formal.
