Cookies and Choices

Most cookie pages are long because most websites store a great deal. Ours is short because we store almost nothing. This page explains the one thing the site keeps in your browser, why it is there and how to remove it.

The one thing we keep

The first time you visit, a small card asks whether you accept or decline. Whichever you choose, your answer is written to your browser's local storage, a small area of memory that belongs to this website on your device. The next time a page loads, the site checks that value and does not show the card again.

  • What is stored: your answer to the notice, nothing more.
  • Where it lives: inside the browser you are reading with, on this device alone.
  • Who can read it: this website, when you visit it. It is not sent to us or anyone else.
  • How long it lasts: until you clear it.

What we do not set

There are no analytics cookies, no advertising cookies and no tracking pixels on this site. We do not load social media buttons that follow you around the web, and we do not run any software that builds a picture of your browsing habits. Declining the notice therefore changes nothing about how the pages work; the articles, images and menus behave exactly the same either way.

Other websites

Some articles include links to other websites. Clicking through to one of them hands you over to that site's own cookie rules. Those cookies have nothing to do with us, and you can manage them in your browser or through that site's own settings.

Changing your mind

To see the notice again or remove your stored answer, clear the site data for this website in your browser. In most browsers you will find this under privacy or site settings, often by clicking the padlock icon next to the address. After that, the notice will appear on your next visit and you can choose again.

Using a private or incognito window has a similar effect: the stored answer disappears when you close the window.

More about your data

The wider picture, including server logs and what happens when you send us an email, is described in privacy for our readers. Questions about any of this can go to us through the contact page. Last updated: October 2026.
